Today SVI will take part in the webinar5 anos do desastre fo Rio Doce/5 years of the Rio Doce Disasterorganized by Conectas Direitos Humanos in cooperation with Caritas Minas Gerais.
Five years ago, the Fundão tailings dam broke, pouring over 40 million cubic meters of tailings into the Doce River (Brazil), killing 16 people and lefting a community of 2,000 people flooded in the city of Mariana in Minas Gerais. The dam belonged to Samarco, a joint venture of Vale and BHP Billiton. 
Manifold human rights and environmental damages to the local community have been caused by this disaster, and continue to have significant impacts today. Investors see the impacts of this disaster as significant reparations remain to be made, both financially and from a reputational standpoint.
 
At this event, members of the affected communities, in Mariana / MG will speak about the difficulties faced in the reparation process and the interactions with the involved companies. The public prosecutor responsible for the case will also join the discussion.
