Palestine Action protests at Labour Conference

In July this year, Andy Burnham apologised for Labour’s Gaza policy. On September 28th, at his first party conference as prime minister, hundreds of people held “I support Palestine Action” signs outside the venue, knowing they may be arrested under the Terrorism Act. Foreign secretary Ed Miliband addressed the issue at the conference, promising the British people outraged by Palestinian suffering that “we hear you, you were right”.

Since the 2025 ban on Palestine Action, more than 3,600 people have been arrested for holding signs. The Filton Five trial produced the first UK terrorism sentences for property damage alone. The defence barrister now faces contempt proceedings over his closing speech. The ban’s lawfulness is heading to the Supreme Court.

Our research Policing Solidarity and its follow-up trace how counter-terrorism law has moved from targeting armed groups to sign-holders. For responsible investors, the “G” in ESG includes the state’s own governance.
