UNGA81: at the UN General Assembly focus on Palestinian Human Rights

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81) opened on Tuesday, 8 September 2026. The general debate was from 22 September to 26 September and it will close on 29 September 202 with the High-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

On 24 September, there were the addresses by the both the President of the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli Prime Minister. The Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas could speak only by video after the US denied him a visa. The Israeli prime minister Netanyahu spoke in person, to a hall that dozens of delegations had walked out of.

Netanyahu used the podium to call New York’s mayor antisemitic, dismiss European governments as yielding to “antisemitic mobs” and call the delegates who left “moral cowards.”

Three years ago, from the same podium, he held up a map of Israel stretching from the river to the sea. That is the same territorial claim that has cost pro-Palestinian protesters in Europe fines, bans, arrests and prosecutions.

Our posts on the history of the slogan “From the river to the sea” and the in-depth research Policing Solidarity on pro-Palestinian protest in Europe show how the antisemitism charge is applied broadly to critics of Israel’s conduct in Gaza while the same claim goes unchallenged when it comes from the other side.
