The article “Development and Sustainable Investments: The Peculiarities of the Italian Case” (original title: “Sviluppo ed investimenti sostenibilli – le peculiarità del caso Italia”) by Daniela Carosio, SVI Senior Partner, was published in the AIAF online review Nr. 86 as of March 2013.

KEY INSIGHTS

Sustainable development refers to the idea of development which safeguards intergenerational equity and is able to increase companies’ positive externalities while decreasing negative ones. In doing so, operators and experts need to be aware of present mega-trends and how to shape and react to them.

When talking about sustainability, the equation between CSR Reporting, Philanthropy and Ethical Finance does not hold, or at least it is not enough. The sustainability of companies is evaluated looking at the heart of business strategies. In doing so, metrics and measurement of the costs related to ESG (Environment, Society and Governance) risks are necessary, as well as the integration of ESG factors into investment processes.

By rethinking the main characteristics of the Italian financial markets, the role of Institutional Investors, their contribution to the investment cycle and to the financing of enterprises, the article highlights how sustainable investments and innovation contribute to sustainable development.
